About The Ks

The Ks embody the sounds of the letter K, crunching and crying out songs of work, heartbreak and lust.

Now the band releases Red Numbers Rising Faster, an epic “Death Party” album, with more life in it than most bands’ “Regular Party” albums. Songs such as “Party in the Graveyard” and “7 Skeletons” were inspired by the death of two musician friends (Louisville legends Mark Watson and Gordon Graham) and songwriter Dan Kilian’s father. The reaper touches other songs more tangentially, and while many songs deal with romantic and financial downturns, Kilian says death inspired even those. “There was a sense that I could die at any moment, too, that we had to get a lot of our best material out right now!” That sense of doom has paid off; Red Numbers Rising Faster is the best work The Ks have ever done.

Sadly, the foreboding proved to be portentous. Drummer Dave “Soup” Campbell died soon after recording this album, killed by cancer. Listen to those drums. That’s one hell of a legacy.

Singer and writer Dan Kilian, who came to New York after some years toiling in obscurity in the overlooked yet still “important” Louisville band The Uglies, formed TheKs with guitarist Ray Beyda, Jeff Gordon on bass, new drummer Ian Thomas, and Jon Mossberger on saxophones, keyboard, effects, percussion and back-up vocals. The songs are strong and the band is tight. It’s an old school extravaganza, pulsing with wit, depth and soul.

Their albums Red Numbers Rising Faster, Can’t Get It Together and Skunk can be found at www.cdbaby.com.
